Domestic violence act

Domestic Violence Act:

The act defines the term 'domestic'. The scope of term women has been widened and it now includes 'live in partners', wives, sisters, widows, mothers, single women, divorced wife.

Definition of domestic violence has been widened- includes actual abuse or threat of abuse that is physical, sexual, verbal, emotional and economic

It provides the right to secure housing in the matrimonial or shared household.

It provides for appointment of protection officers and NGOs to provide assistance to the woman for medical examination, legal aid and safe Shelter.

Non-compliance or discharge of duties by the protection officer is also sought to be made an offence under the Act with similar punishment.

A progressive piece of legislation in the direction of providing equal socioeconomic rights and empowerment to the women in the country.
