10. Rain-fed Agriculture

In the greater parts (over 55%) of the country, agriculture is largely dependent on rainfall, especially the summer monsoon. Unfortunately, the behaviour of summer monsoon is highly erratic. Consequently, the variability of rainfall is high which affects the agricultural return adversely. Only about 55 per cent of the total cropped area is under irrigation in which the farmers sire more confident about their agricultural returns even at the failure of monsoon, as it happened in 2009.
