Hydro-Electricity

As stated in the preceding paragraph, the first hydro-electric plant in India was commissioned in 1898 at Darjeeling. It was followed by the Mettur (Tamil Nadu) and Sivasamudram (Karnataka) projects which were commissioned in 1899 and 1902 respectively. The fourth hydro-power station was built on thejhelum river at Mohara in 1909. The real progress in the production of hydropower took place after independence when a number of multipurpose projects were constructed. Some of these projects are the Bhakra-Nangal Dam, Rihand-Dam, llirakud-Dam, Nagarjun-sagar, Damodar Valley Corporation, Chambal, Tungbhadra, and Koyna projects.
