Mangroves are large flowering shrubs or trees that grow in dense thickest forests along muddy or silty tropical coasts. According to the latest assessment mangrove covers 4639 sq. km or 0.14 per cent of the geographical area of the country. The government of India has identified 28 mangrove areas. The stalewise distribution of mangroves has been given in Table: 5.6.
